When am I Most Likely to Get Pregnant?

When you’re sexually active, you may be worried about pregnancy and wondering when it’s most likely to happen. The process can feel confusing, but understanding a few basic facts can help you make informed decisions about your health and future.

At Colorado Springs Pregnancy Center, we provide clear answers about pregnancy and sexual health. Keep reading to learn when you’ll most likely get pregnant and how to protect your well-being.

When Does Pregnancy Happen?

Pregnancy is most likely to occur if sperm are present in the reproductive system during a specific time in your cycle. This is when an egg is released from your ovary, a process known as ovulation. Once your body releases an egg, fertilization can happen for about 12-24 hours.

However, sperm can survive in your body for up to five days after sex, so even if you have sex a few days before ovulation, pregnancy can still happen.

During a regular 28-day cycle, a woman will typically ovulate on day 14. The best chance of getting pregnant is when you have sex from a few days before ovulation to one day after it. This is your most fertile window.

How Do I Know When I’m Ovulating?

It can be tricky to figure out exactly when you’re ovulating, especially if you don’t track it regularly and your period is irregular. Here are a few simple ways to help you recognize the signs:

  • Changes in your discharge: Around ovulation, your vaginal discharge may become clear, stretchy, and look like raw egg whites. This is a sign that you’re fertile.
  • Using a period tracker: Many apps can help you track your period and predict when you’re most likely to ovulate. If your cycle is regular, ovulation typically happens around day 14 of your cycle. If your cycle is irregular, these apps can still help give you an estimate based on the length of your cycle.
  • Ovulation test kits: These kits test hormone levels in your urine to tell you when you’re about to ovulate.
