It sounds simple enough. Take a pill. Problem solved. However, choosing any type of abortion is a major medical decision. Abortions can have serious emotional, psychological, and physical consequences. What exactly is the abortion pill, how does it work, and is it right for you? Let’s take a closer look.

The Abortion Pill

The two types of abortion are medical and surgical. The Abortion Pill is known as a medical abortion. Obtaining a medical abortion is a two-step process starting with a clinic visit. Before you can have an abortion, you will need to have an ultrasound. The ultrasound gives you real-time information, such as how far along you are and if your pregnancy is viable (a heartbeat is detected). This can determine the type of abortion procedure. Medical abortions are usually performed within the first nine weeks of pregnancy. If your pregnancy is farther along than nine weeks, typically you would need a surgical abortion.

How Does the Abortion Pill It Work?

The first pill, Mifepristone (Mifeprex®), blocks the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is known as the “pregnancy hormone.” It helps the fertilized egg implant in the uterus. Mifepristone causes the lining of the uterus to thin and prevents the fetus from staying implanted. The second drug, Misoprostol, is taken at home. It causes the uterus to contract to expel the fetus. Generally, it’s taken hours or even days after the first drug.

Risks and Side Effects of the Abortion Pill

Because of the risks of abortion, it’s important to have a doctor’s supervision. It is illegal to purchase the abortion pill online, so visiting your doctor or a clinic is necessary.

Potential risks of medical abortion using the Abortion Pill include heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or back pain, and ongoing fever. There is also a risk of getting a pelvic infection with abortion. Additionally, it is possible for an incomplete abortion to occur, which would require further medical intervention such as surgery or potentially cause infection.

Do not have a medical abortion if you have an IUD, take a blood thinner, or have certain medical conditions such as kidney or lung disease, or uncontrolled seizure disorder.

In addition, abortion can affect a woman emotionally and psychologically. Many women report feelings of guilt, shame, and sadness. Some women become depressed and begin to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Often, women internalize their choice, never telling others because of their shame. Post-abortion feelings can last a lifetime if you don’t have an outlet for counseling.
