It’s completely natural to be nervous or afraid of giving birth—especially if it’s your first time. It’s an unknown and new experience and one you often see dramatized in movies or TV shows.

However, women have been giving birth since the beginning of time, and if you’re reading this right now, someone gave birth to you, too. It’s important to keep birth in perspective.

Here are some tips if you feel afraid of giving birth.

1. Focus on the Goal.

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, make your pregnancy choice with confidence and not based on fear. Gather the information you need about all three pregnancy options and make an empowered decision.

If you choose pregnancy or adoption, giving birth is a part of it. Remind yourself of why you’re giving birth and the result that will come from it. A first birth can last hours, but your decision will lead to a lifetime for your future child.

2. Become Informed.

The more you know, the more you can prepare for labor and delivery.

You can prepare by reading about birth, breathing techniques, and special stretches and exercises to prepare your body for labor. Educating yourself will take away some of the mystery of what you can expect to help you feel more at ease.

Consider taking classes to feel even more confident. Ask us for recommendations.

3. Know You’ll Be Monitored by Experts.

When you go to a hospital for birth, know you will be surrounded and monitored by a team of doctors and nurses, educated and well-practiced in labor and delivery.

You will be monitored very closely and able to choose pain management methods to fit your preferences. When you attend your prenatal appointments, you can ask your care team for more information specific to their hospital and what to expect.

If you prefer more support, midwives and doulas can be excellent resources.

4. Let Nature Happen.

Your body knows what to do from ovulation to conception, pregnancy, and birth. Complex processes and hormonal changes happen without your awareness.

Relax and let nature happen. The more at ease you can be, the better. Just like your body knows how to breathe, digest food, and sleep, it also knows how to give birth.

If there are any issues along the way, doctors and nurses will be ready to treat you.
