Do I Have a Sexually Transmitted Disease?

Pregnancy isn’t the only issue to worry about when sexually active. STDs are equally, if not more, concerning. You are at risk for pregnancy if you have sex around ovulation (about three days a month), but you risk getting an STD every time you have sex. All forms of sexual activity can put you at risk of contracting an STD.

An STD does not always show physical signs or symptoms. It’s important to remember that not all infected people will have signs or symptoms, including you.

What Are the Symptoms of an STD?

The symptoms of an STD are different depending on the infection. Many STDs do not cause noticeable symptoms, so the only way to know if you have an STD is to get tested. You can get an STD from having sex with someone who has no symptoms. Like you, that person might not even know they have an STD.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea often have no symptoms, but you may experience:

  • Pain or irritation when you urinate or have sex
  • Discharge from the vagina, penis, anus, or throat
  • Unexplained rash, burning, or lesion in the genital area

What Should I Do If I Think I Have an STD?

Early treatment of STDs is vital to prevent more serious and long-term complications. If you think you have an STD:

  • Do not continue to have sex.
  • Contact the Colorado Springs Pregnancy Center to get tested immediately.
  • Notify your recent sexual partner(s) if you are diagnosed with an STD.
