2022 was a year with a lot of changes and questions. The overturning of Roe v. Wade has left many wondering what the future of women’s rights in the US might look like.

Though the decision to legalize abortion has been left to each individual state to determine for itself, there are no current abortion restrictions in Colorado.

What was Roe v. Wade?

Roe v. Wade was the landmark Supreme Court decision in 1973 on legalizing abortion as a constitutional right. This ruling was overturned in June of 2022.

Because it was overturned as a constitutional right, it is now being left up to each individual state to determine whether it should be legal. This ultimately gives power back to the people, allowing them to elect representatives who will not only speak on their behalf, but work to make laws that represent the views of the voters.

What Does All of This Mean for Women’s Rights?

The overturning of Roe v. Wade will impact the options that a woman may have for her pregnancy depending on what state she is located in. Since the legalization of abortion has been left up to the states, there are now certain states that have limited to no abortion access.

What Risks Should I Know About If I am Thinking About An Abortion?

As with any medical procedure, it is important to consult with a trusted provider to have a thorough exam with a medical history and learn about all of the potential risks (physical and emotional) that may be involved.

Physical risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
