If so, we invite you to come into the Colorado Springs Pregnancy Center and let us answer your questions. It is very important that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about your pregnancy and your baby. Before undergoing any medical procedure, you have a right to know the potential risks and side effects.

Evaluate the Risks
The risks and side effects of abortion vary from woman to woman. The following physical complications are possible for 2-4 weeks following an abortion: abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, spotting and bleeding, infection, sexual difficulties, sexual pain, damage to the cervix, infection, perforation of the uterus, and scarring of the uterus.

There are also emotional side effects of having an abortion. Many women who come to us for aftercare at one of our pregnancy centers report emotional side effects after having an abortion. Many who have had abortions feel regret or guilt, grief, an increased tendency for anger, rage, or violence. Some also struggle with loneliness and relationship issues following the loss of their baby. Others report feelings of depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide. These are all valid emotions that follow an abortion and it is essential that women who have aborted find help and healing.

Understand the Abortion Procedure
There are several types of abortion procedures and you should be informed about the exact procedure you will be having.

The two general categories of abortions are medical and surgical:
  • Medical abortion - The mother is given medicine based on how far along she is in her pregnancy. Plan B or the "Morning after Pill" can be administered if the mother is within 72 hours of conception. Up to 9 weeks, RU-486 can be given to deprive the baby of necessary nutrients.
  • Surgical abortions - These procedures include Suction Aspiration or Curettage, Dilation and Curettage, Dilation and Evacuation, Medical Induction, Dilation and Extraction, as well as several other procedures. Each of these procedures include risks to the mother - physical and emotional.
If you aren't sure what kind of abortion you will be having, contact your doctor and find out the details. Then we can discuss the procedure with you. You have the right to know all the details before undergoing any medical procedure.
